In recent months, I have noticed a clear shift in conversations across the medicinal mushroom industry.

More suppliers, brands, formulators, and customers are asking about “full-spectrum mushroom powder.” In some cases, the conversation has moved away from the familiar questions:

What is the extract ratio? How many beta-glucans does it contain? Is it a fruiting body or mycelium?

And toward a new question:

Do you have full-spectrum mushrooms?

This development is significant, as it indicates increasing interest in the entire mushroom matrix rather than solely isolated markers or concentrated extracts. However, it also raises a critical concern: without a precise definition, the term “full spectrum” risks becoming an appealing yet ambiguous marketing phrase.

As someone actively engaged in medicinal mushroom raw materials, quality assessment, and product development, I believe we need to approach this conversation with greater precision.

What Does “Full Spectrum” Actually Mean?

In theory, a full-spectrum mushroom ingredient should preserve a broad range of naturally occurring fungal compounds.

That may include beta-glucans, other polysaccharides, chitin, dietary fiber, proteins, amino acids, minerals, sterols such as ergosterol, antioxidants such as ergothioneine, phenolic compounds, and species-specific metabolites such as triterpenes, cordycepin, hericenones, or other bioactive fractions.

This concept is logically sound.

Mushrooms are complex biological systems. They are not simply “beta-glucan products.” Reishi is not only beta-glucans. Lion’s Mane is not only hericenones. Cordyceps is not only cordycepin. Tremella is not only a hydration polysaccharide.

The integrity of the full fungal matrix is essential.

But here is the challenge: “full spectrum” is not a standardized scientific category in the mushroom industry.

For one supplier, full spectrum may mean whole fruiting body powder. For another, it may mean a 1:1 hot-water extract. For another, it may mean a dual extract. For another, it may mean mycelium grown on grain. And for another, it may simply be a marketing term placed on the label.

Therefore, the discussion must move beyond terminology and address the specifics.

Full Spectrum vs. Extract Is the Wrong Debate

The industry often likes simple arguments.

“Extracts are better.” “Whole powder is more natural.” “Fruiting body is superior.” “Mycelium is more complete.” “High-ratio extracts are stronger.” “Full spectrum is more holistic.”

But medicinal mushrooms are not simple ingredients, and they should not be evaluated through simple slogans.

The real question is not whether full spectrum is better than extract.

The real questions are:

Which mushroom species are we talking about? Which part of the fungus is used? How was it processed? What compounds are we trying to preserve or concentrate? What is the final product format? And most importantly: what does the testing show?

A whole fruiting body powder may preserve the natural mushroom matrix. Still, it may be less concentrated and sometimes less bioavailable if it has not been cooked, extracted, or properly processed.

A 1:1 hot-water extract may offer a strong middle ground: closer to the traditional mushroom decoction, more accessible than raw powder, and still relatively close to the whole mushroom profile.

A concentrated extract, such as 4:1 or 8:1, may deliver a higher level of measurable actives per gram, especially when the goal is to provide meaningful beta-glucan levels in a small serving.

A dual extract may be appropriate for mushrooms such as Reishi, where both water-soluble beta-glucans and alcohol-soluble triterpenes may be relevant.

Thus, this issue is not ideological.

It is fundamentally a technical question.

Why Is the Market Moving Toward Full Spectrum?

Several factors are driving this trend.

First, consumers are becoming more cautious about overprocessed supplements. They are looking for whole-food language, clean labels, natural matrix ingredients, and products that feel closer to food than pharmaceuticals.

Second, medicinal mushrooms are no longer limited to capsules. They are now used in coffee, cacao, ready-to-drink beverages, gummies, bars, protein powders, beauty products, and longevity formulas. In these applications, the ingredient must work not only scientifically, but also sensorially. Taste, solubility, texture, color, mouthfeel, and consumer perception all matter.

Third, the industry has overused extract-ratio language for years. A “10:1 extract” sounds powerful, but without clear information about beta-glucans, alpha-glucans, starch, extraction method, source material, and species identity, the ratio alone does not tell us enough.

Fourth, customers are becoming more educated. Many now understand that “polysaccharides” and “beta-glucans” are not the same thing. This is a major step forward.

A product may show high total polysaccharides and still contain significant starch, especially if it is made from mycelium grown on grain. Without beta-glucan and alpha-glucan testing, the number can be misleading.

This represents one of the most significant quality challenges currently facing the medicinal mushroom market.

The Risk Behind the Trend

The full-spectrum movement can be beneficial if it prompts the industry to acknowledge and respect the complexity of mushrooms.

But it can also become a problem if it is used to avoid hard questions.

A supplier may say, “This is full spectrum.”

But we still need to ask: Is it a fruiting body or mycelium? Is the mycelium grown on grain? Is the grain substrate included in the final product? Is it raw powder, hot-water extract, dual extract, or concentrated extract? What is the beta-glucan content? What is the alpha-glucan or starch content? Is the COA batch-specific? Are heavy metals tested? Are pesticides tested? Are microbiology results available? Are species-specific markers tested?

In the absence of these answers, the term “full spectrum” lacks substantive meaning.

Although it may appear to be premium, from a scientific perspective, it’s still incomplete.

Beta-Glucans Still Matter

Some people in the full-spectrum conversation speak as if beta-glucans are no longer important.

I strongly contest this viewpoint.

Beta-glucans remain among the most important and measurable bioactive groups in medicinal mushrooms, particularly for immune modulation, metabolic support, and healthy aging.

But beta-glucans are not the entire story.

The more accurate position is this:

Beta-glucans matter, but they must be evaluated inside the full mushroom context.

That means we should consider beta-glucans alongside alpha-glucans, starch content, extraction method, fungal part, species identity, and relevant secondary metabolites.

For example:

Reishi should not be evaluated solely based on beta-glucans. Triterpenes may also matter.

Cordyceps should not be evaluated solely based on beta-glucans. Species identity, cordycepin, and adenosine may be important depending on the product.

Lion’s Mane fruiting body should not be evaluated only by beta-glucans. Hericenones may be relevant. If true mycelium extract is used, erinacines may be relevant.

Tremella should be evaluated for its polysaccharide profile and its role in hydration and skin-support applications.

Maitake and Turkey Tail require serious beta-glucan characterization, not vague polysaccharide claims.

At this juncture, scientific rigor must guide marketing practices.

Full Spectrum Is Not Automatically Better

A full-spectrum mushroom powder can be excellent.

It can also be weak.

An extract can be excellent.

It can also be poorly made.

The category alone does not ensure quality.

Rigorous testing provides that assurance.

Whole mushroom powder may preserve the broader natural matrix, but it usually provides lower active density per gram.

A concentrated extract may provide a higher active density but may lose some of the insoluble mushroom matrix.

Dual extract may be ideal for one mushroom and unnecessary for another.

Mycelium-on-grain may be marketed beautifully but contain more grain-derived starch than fungal beta-glucans.

So instead of asking only, “Is it full spectrum?” we should ask:

Full spectrum of what? From which fungal part? Processed how? Measured by which markers? Verified by which tests?

What Brands and Formulators Should Look For

For brands, formulators, and product developers, I believe the checklist should be very clear.

Define the mushroom species. Avoid vague “mushroom blend” language without species-level identification.

Clarify the fungal part used: fruiting body, mycelium, sclerotium, spores, or a combination.

Ask whether grain substrate is included, especially in mycelium-based materials.

Require beta-glucan testing, not only total polysaccharides.

Require alpha-glucan or starch testing to understand whether the ingredient is mushroom-rich or starch-heavy.

Understand the production method: raw powder, hot-water extract, 1:1 extract, concentrated extract, or dual extract.

Match the process to the mushroom. Reishi, Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Tremella, Maitake, and Turkey Tail should not all be treated the same way.

Evaluate the final product format. Capsules, mushroom coffee, beverages, gummies, protein powders, and clinical formulas do not require the same ingredient strategy.

Demand batch-specific COAs, not generic marketing documents.

Finally, exaggerated health claims should be avoided. Medicinal mushrooms can support wellness, resilience, vitality, immune balance, cognitive health, and healthy aging, but they should not be presented as cures or medical treatments.

My View

The full-spectrum movement is not meaningless.

It reflects something real: the market is beginning to understand that mushrooms are complex living systems, not simply extract ratios or single-marker ingredients.

That is a positive direction.

However, the term “full spectrum” remains insufficiently defined. When used responsibly, it can indicate a more holistic, matrix-aware approach to medicinal mushroom formulation. When used irresponsibly, it becomes another premium-sounding phrase that is challenging for consumers to verify.

The future of medicinal mushrooms should be grounded in substantive criteria rather than marketing buzzwords.

It should be founded on transparency, species-specific formulation, appropriate processing, analytical testing, and accurate education.

The real question is not:

“Full spectrum or extract?”

The real question is:

What is the right mushroom ingredient for the right purpose – and can the supplier prove its quality?

This is the direction in which the industry must progress. Furthermore, this is where leading mushroom companies should provide guidance.

Over the last 12–18 months, mushroom coffee has gone from “quirky wellness aisle curiosity” to a full-blown attention-economy category. New brands and influencer promos are nonstop. The claims have escalated into an arms race: focus, gut health, immunity, calm energy, better sleep, “no crash”-sometimes all in the same ad.

When a category expands this fast, the real question becomes:

Is this durable consumer demand or a hype loop?

My honest answer: both.

There is measurable consumer behavior driving this market; however, these behaviors are being amplified and, at times, distorted by an affiliate-based growth strategy that rewards persuasive tactics rather than verifiable evidence. This dynamic, which I refer to as the “Link Controversy,” is fueled by the use of affiliate links, social shopping links, expert endorsements, and newsletters, along with the incentives that accompany them.

The result is a trust gap: people are curious, but increasingly unsure what’s real.

1) Why brands are flooding in: “perfect DTC physics.”

Mushroom coffee is a DTC magnet because it has:

  • Recurring use (habit potential)
  • High margins and light shipping
  • A strong story (identity + benefits)
  • Easy differentiation (flavors, blends, “stacks,” extracts)

You can launch quickly with contract manufacturing, paid social, and a Shopify storefront. That’s not a moral judgment just how incentives work in modern consumers.

It’s also riding a bigger wave: functional mushrooms are showing up everywhere – cocoa, gummies, sodas, chocolates. Mushroom coffee benefits from that broader trend.

Although the mushroom coffee segment remains smaller than the overall coffee market, its growth has attracted greater investment, competition, and regulatory scrutiny. This typically signals the end of the initial rapid growth period for similar emerging categories.

2) The Link Controversy: why claims inflate

When customer acquisition runs through influencer links and paid media, the optimization target becomes:

What gets the click and the conversion?

Not:

  • What’s the most scientifically defensible statement?
  • What’s the most accurate representation of dosage and evidence?
  • What’s the most transparent sourcing story?

That pressure reliably produces:

  • Overpromising (“better sleep” + “all-day energy” with no nuance)
  • Implied disease claims (skirting rules through implication)
  • Proof-by-testimonial (screenshots > data)
  • Opaque formulas (“proprietary blend,” no extract ratio, no COA)

Then – inevitably – scrutiny.

This trend is not limited to a single brand but indicates category maturation: mushroom coffee has reached a size where claims have become both a key competitive differentiator and a regulatory concern. If brands are unable to substantiate assertive marketing language, regulatory or market forces may eventually require them to revise their messaging.

Key takeaway: The category is shifting from unregulated claims to evidence-based marketing. Only brands with substantiated claims and transparency will thrive; weaker ones will fall behind.

3) Americans, coffee, and the myth of “caffeine decline.”

A lot of mushroom coffee marketing rests on a quiet premise:

Americans are abandoning caffeine.

The broader pattern doesn’t support that as a general trend.

Coffee consumption remains extremely high, and reported daily consumption has increased since 2020. What’s changing isn’t love for caffeine it’s how people consume it.

A more accurate framing:

Caffeine isn’t disappearing – it’s being redistributed.

Less from some traditional sources (like soda/tea), more toward coffee and, for certain segments, energy drinks.

So what’s actually happening?

People aren’t quitting caffeine. They’re renegotiating their relationship with it.

The real behavioral driver is what I call “caffeine anxiety”:

  • jitters
  • afternoon crashes
  • sleep disruption
  • anxiety spikes
  • dependence guilt (“I need coffee”)

This is where mushroom coffee occupies a market position not as a competitor to traditional coffee, but as a managed-caffeine alternative that offers a different experience for some consumers, emphasizing both ritual and function.

4) What consumers are actually buying

In practice, mushroom coffee wins when it delivers at least two of three:

  1. A felt experience Not miracles, just noticeable differences: gentler stimulation, less crash, calmer mornings, easier digestion for some.
  2. A coherent identity story “I’m the kind of person who… cares about wellness / optimizes focus / reduces dependence / upgrades daily rituals.”
  3. Taste + habit fit If it tastes bad or adds friction, it doesn’t survive beyond the first bag, no matter how good the claims sound.

Main takeaway: Sustainable success relies on building repeat purchases, not viral trends. Customer retention signals real product value.

5) The raw material problem: “mushroom” isn’t one ingredient

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: mushroom input quality across the market is wildly uneven, and consumers usually can’t tell at a glance.

A) Species + part used matters + Process

“Mushroom” can mean very different things:

  • Fruiting bodies (cap/stem)
  • Mycelium (fungal network)
  • Mycelium grown on grain (can retain significant residual starch)
  • Extracts or powders

Why it matters: Grain residue can dilute fungal material per gram and confuse broad “polysaccharide” claims. “Polysaccharides” is vague; it can include meaningful fungal components, but also starches.

Most practical consumer signal: does the brand provide batch-level testing that separates:

  • beta-glucans (a key fungal cell-wall marker) from
  • starch/alpha-glucans (often associated with grain/starch content)?

If a brand won’t show that, you’re operating on faith.

B) Extracts vs powders (and why “10:1” isn’t enough)

There’s also a major quality divider between:

  • Whole powders (dried and milled) and
  • Extracts (processed to concentrate compound families)

Extraction can meaningfully change composition and concentration without guaranteeing consistent results. Common approaches include:

  • Hot water extraction (often aimed at water-soluble polysaccharides/beta-glucans)
  • Alcohol/ethanol extraction (often aimed at more fat-soluble compounds like certain triterpenes)
  • Dual extraction (water + alcohol to capture broader fractions)

And then there are extraction ratios (8:1, 10:1, 20:1). These can sound impressive, but scientifically, the ratio alone doesn’t tell you:

  • the quality of the starting material
  • whether it was fruiting body vs mycelium-on-grain
  • the extraction conditions
  • Or what the extract is actually standardized to

Better signal than ratio: standardized markers. A lower ratio extract that’s properly standardized can outperform a high ratio product that isn’t.

C) COAs aren’t just “potency”, they’re safety and trust

Mushrooms can bioaccumulate compounds from their environment. Depending on sourcing, the COAs or clear decoration of content matter for both:

  • what’s in it, and
  • What’s not in it

Trust-but-verify checklist:

  1. Species + part used clearly stated
  2. Batch COA available, or clear decoration of content
  3. Potency markers disclosed (beta-glucans + starch/alpha-glucans)
  4. Minimal miracle language

6) Where this market is headed

The next phase: market consolidation. Focus on providing measurable quality and transparency.

I expect the category to split into two durable lanes:

  • Coffee-plus: real coffee + functional mushrooms, moderate claims, taste-first
  • Coffee alternative ritual: lower/no caffeine, deeper functional stacks, wellness-positioned

The key takeaway: Claims will become more precise, marketing will evolve, and visible product quality will set brands apart.

What I recommend before adopting a mushroom coffee

  1. Decide what you’re solving (less caffeine vs no caffeine vs smoother mornings)
  2. Look for beta-glucans vs starch -“polysaccharides” alone isn’t enough.
  3. Be skeptical of miracle stacks.
  4. Run a 2-week trial and track sleep, jitters/crash, digestion, mood/energy.

Main takeaway: Mushroom coffee will remain, but exaggerated marketing claims will fade. Transparency, taste, and consumer trust will define lasting brands.

What remains will be brands that win on transparency, taste, and trustnot just links.

The internet flattened the world, turning local into global almost overnight. Knowledge, once bound by borders, became limitless. Food followed. What was once seasonal or regional berries, oils, spices, herbs, even vitamins-is now accessible year-round in supermarkets from Milwaukee to Mumbai.

Yet, amidst this global pantry, mushrooms stand apart. They are not just commodities on a shelf; they are organisms that transform matter, shape ecosystems, and-most remarkably-interact with the human body in ways both measurable and mysterious.

For millennia, cultures across the world have eaten, brewed, and revered mushrooms for nourishment, ritual, and healing. In recent decades, science has joined tradition, elevating mushrooms from folklore to the focus of clinical trials. They now sit at the nexus of food and medicine, viewed simultaneously as adaptogens, nutraceuticals, and potential therapeutic allies.

Beyond the Supplement Aisle: The Adaptogenic Reality

Unlike single-target drugs, medicinal mushrooms do not lock onto a single receptor with predictable precision. They act adaptogenically-across multiple systems at once. The immune, endocrine, nervous, and metabolic networks all come into play.

When it comes to nutritional supplements, particularly those that affect health and well-being, prioritizing price over quality can have significant repercussions.

It’s tempting to dismiss this as simply “the way business works” or to repeat the notion that “price is king.” However, in our industry, this mindset can lead to real-world consequences. The market is saturated with inferior raw materials offered at rock-bottom prices. Many of these products provide minimal or no health benefits and, in some cases, may even be harmful.

Additionally, a concerning marketing trend is emerging: one that overlooks scientific rigor and employs language that is poor. Instead of emphasizing measurable active ingredients and established standards, we are witnessing narratives focused on branding and vague promises. The result? Products that boast impressive labels but deliver little in terms of efficacy.

A Lesson from Olive Oil

Years ago, I worked in the olive oil industry, where counterfeiting—especially during periods of low yield—was rampant. The counterfeits became so sophisticated that many could pass basic tests. However, something remarkable occurred: the industry united to combat this issue.

Farmers, marketers, and regulators came together to:

• Implement traceability systems for varieties and growing methods

• Publish data on yields and expected prices

• Raise consumer awareness

As a result, counterfeiters found fewer places to hide, and consumers became more informed. While the problem hasn’t entirely disappeared, it is now easier to identify and access trustworthy, high-quality olive oil.

Discuss growing costs, extraction techniques, and the value of various cultivation methods openly. Help buyers understand why some materials cost more—and why they should.

3. Empower the Customer

Encourage consumers to ask better questions: What active compounds are present? What extraction method was used? Is there clinical data to support these claims?

4. Support Independent Testing

Promote third-party testing and share results—illuminate discrepancies between marketing claims and scientific facts.

5. Take Responsibility as Industry Stewards

We are not just suppliers or marketers; we are part of the healthcare ecosystem. Our mission comes with the responsibility to prioritize quality, safety, and impact over short-term profits.
